The black car almost side-swiped me. The tires of the black four-door sedan crossed the orange line and they were partially in my lane. Dear Mother on the highway texting with your baby in the backseat, put down your phone.
I saw you today, 2:38 PM, on Highway 422 West. You were driving in the far left-hand lane of a three lane highway. I was driving in the middle lane. Put down your phone. Did you know you almost hit me?
I saw you cross the orange line and your tires were completely in my lane. You almost hit me. As I drove past you, I glanced into your car. You weren’t looking at the road, you were looking at your phone. Put down your phone. Did you know you almost hit me?
I saw your child in the back-seat. Facing forward you put your baby in the safest spot in the car. She wasn’t old enough to be in the front seat. Her head didn’t clear the top of her car seat.
I know you think you are good at driving and texting. I know you think you can handle driving and looking at your phone. You think you can handle it because you still do it. You still look at your phone while you drive.
Did you know
Did you know 23% of auto accidents in 2011 involved a cell phone?
Did you know five seconds is the minimal amount of time your attention is taken away from the road, If you are driving at 55 mph, that equals driving the length of a football field blind?
Did you know that when a person dies they are gone forever?
Did you know bad things can happen to good people?
Would you like to know how to safely use your cell phone when you are driving?
You can’t. There is no such thing. If is never safe to use your cell phone while you are driving.
Keep you cell phone in your pocket or in your purse. Don’t take it out. If you are expecting a phone call, pull over, and park in a safe area, like a parking lot, or in a residential neighborhood, on the side of the road. Don’t pull over on the highway to use your phone. Ever.
If you want to tell someone you will be late. Don’t.
Put down your phone.
Your baby is in the back seat.
