This morning Annie and I went for a walk. We watched the sun come up. Somehow, I forgot how to breathe.
The slow kind of breathing, where you are not worried about a deadline. The kind of breathing where you have time to walk your dog and watch the sun come up. We left the house at 5:30, the birds woke us up. Annie laying beside my bed waiting for me to put on my shoes.
“And she tried to breathe.”
― Alison McGhee,
Today, this morning I tried to breathe. Slowly. One foot in front of the other. Touching the tree bark, petting the dog, smelling the flowers.
The past few days. Weeks? Months? I have felt anxious. My glass empty. Staring at the ground and not at the sky. Forgetting joy even as I washed my dishes with Joy soap.
In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.
— Psalm 5:3
Have you forgotten how to breathe?
Today, look at the sky. And breathe.
